OMF TROUBLESHOOTING FAQ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PROBLEM : OMF runs slowly on my 386/486. What can I do? SOLUTION : Your computer or VGA card isn't as fast as the game would like. You can speed up the game by going into the "Configuration" and "Video Options" menus and turning off "Animation," "Palette Animation" and the other detail settings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : When I hold 2+0+9+7, I don't get the Advanced options. SOLUTION : Some keyboards will not respond properly when holding the 2+0+9+7 keys down at the same time. If this happens, run OMF buy typing OMF ADVANCED. The "ADVANCED" parameter is case sensitive, so make sure you type it in all CAPS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : Why is the scoring the same regardless of the difficulty level? SOLUTION : This is a bug in v2.0. The scoring bug has been corrected in v2.1. To update your copy of OMF, download the v2.1 patch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : Why can't I get dual joysticks to work properly? SOLUTION : Here a few solutions that solve most joystick problems that you may encounter while playing OMF: If you have two game ports in your computer (ex. one on your sound card and one on your i/o card) make sure that one of them is disabled. Disabling a game port is usually done with jumpers or through software configuration. Consult your owners manual for more details. If you are running a Y-adaptor, make sure that the game port it is connected to will support a Y-adaptor. Not all game ports are capable of handling two controllers. Your owners manual will tell you if your card supports two joysticks or not. When using two controllers, make sure that both are configured for two buttons and not four. If one or both controllers have more than two buttons and you can not switch it to two button control dual joystick support will not work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : I can't seem to get ANYTHING on the screen. I type OMF and the system "hangs." What now? SOLUTION : Make sure you have the system requirements mentioned in the manual. If you do, you may have TSR's that conflict with OMF. Remove the TSR's and try running OMF with a "clean boot" from a DOS diskette (see the general tech FAQ for more details). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : Why does the game lockup and the music stutter in the middle of a fight? SOLUTION : This was a bug in the MASTER.DAT file of v1.0. This bug has been corrected in all versions after 1.0. To update your copy of OMF, download the v2.1 patch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : When I play OMF the computer locks up or reboots. SOLUTION : Run SETUP and verify that your settings are correct. If you are not using a sound card, make sure that SETUP is set for "No Sound Card". If you are using a sound card, verify that: The correct options are specified in SETUP. Check your address, IRQ, and DMA settings (most sound cards operate on DMA 1). If you don't know your card's address, IRQ, and DMA settings, consult your manual for details on figuring them out. Make sure your sound card has no address, IRQ, or DMA conflicts with other cards in your system. If your sound card works properly with other games, you can assume that there are no conflicts. However, if your sound card does not work with other games, you have a conflict. See your sound card manual for details on fixing this. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : While playing I get dumped back to DOS with an error message. SOLUTION : This means that either (1) OMF is conflicting with your memory managers and TSR's, or (2) you need more free memory to run OMF. Try booting clean and running OMF (see the general tech FAQ for more details). Several Epic testers have reported errors when running OMF with QEMM. We haven't been able to duplicate this problem or figure out its cause. However, booting clean has always solved it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : Why do I get a Runtime Error when I finish fighting Raven. SOLUTION : This was a bug in v1.0 of OMF. This bug has been corrected in all versions after 1.0. To update your copy of OMF, download the v2.1 patch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : I can't seem to get any sound from OMF. What did you do to me? SOLUTION : First, you must run the SETUP program that came with the game. It will prompt you for settings for your sound card. Make sure these are correct. If you still don't hear anything, try running another program that uses the same card and make sure it works. Make sure the settings in OMF match that of your other programs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : The music sometimes skips like a broken record. SOLUTION : The "Sound Quality" setting is too high for your computer and sound card to handle. Please run SETUP again and select a lower "Sound Quality" setting. The Medium setting will give you okay sound quality, while avoiding most music problems. If this does not cure the problem, try booting clean -- that will give OMF extra CPU power to handle the music and sound. NOTE:On slower computers running Windows 95, the music in OMF may skip and stutter when your hard disk is swapping files. To avoid this, boot into MS-DOS mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : I get the error message "msample load error #2." What can I do? SOLUTION : One Must Fall requires that your GUS card has at least 512K of on board RAM to play a GUS soundtrack. Most new GUS cards meet this requirement, but some older ones were shipped with only 256K. If you do not have 512K of on board RAM (on your GUS), try loading SBOS (in your AUTOEXEC.BAT) and setting up OMF for Sound Blaster emulation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : My modem uses a non standard IRQ. How do I change it? SOLUTION : OMF includes an advanced options section in the modem set up. Go to the advanced options and put in your IRQ like this: -IRQ X (where x is the IRQ for your modem) Now you should be able to use your modem for OMF head to head action! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : I can't seem to get a connection to the Epic BBS for One Must Fall. SOLUTION : The Epic Challenge Arena was originally set up to test the modem link for BBS play. This site was disconnected due to problems in the software. With other projects taking precedence and the arrival of Windows 95 as a viable gaming platform, the window of opportunity for this product would have closed before it was ready for release. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : My game runs really slow when playing a modem game. SOLUTION : There are a few things that affect game speed while playing a modem game. Check the following list for some possible ideas. Make sure your modem speed is set to the highest setting possible for your modem. Turn down the video options in the configuration menu. Try turning off the following: shadows screen shakes snow checking Also make sure your init string does not enable error checking and data correction. Neither of these are needed for OMF modem play. For more information on how to disable these, consult your modems manual or contact the modems manufacturer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM : What are the advanced options I can use with OMF? SOLUTION : The following is a list of advanced options for One Must Fall. -ADDR : To manually specify the port address, enter this parameter, followed by the port address. -ACCEPT : Accept calls in the background as game plays. -ANSWER : Waits for a call then answer the phone. -ANSWERNOW : Answer immediately. -BAUD : Sets baud rate. (2400, 9600, 14400, 28800, 19200, 38400.) -COM : Sets your COM port (1/2/3/4), default is 2. -DIAL (phone) : Dial this phone number. -INIT (string) : Your modem's init string (Default is "ATZ") -IRQ # : You can specify your modem's IRQ in this string. Just replace the # symbol with the IRQ used. -NO16550 : If you have an older 8250 UART COM port, or your opponent does, use this setting. -ONLINE : My modem is already connected and online. -SERIAL : Use direct serial link, not modem. -SET (8N1/7E2) : Set data bits, parity, stop bits. Default is 8N1. -TERM : Go into terminal mode so you can manually log in. NOTE: You must include the (-) at the beginning of the advanced option you are adding. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE from X-BoT: This FAQ is the official Tech FAQ from Epic's Tech Support Staff.
