Welcome to the Datacube:

This is my little database over random tibits of information and ideas regarding omf2097. If you have any information or ideas about omf2097 go to the Forums and post it. I will try to make more of these as I can come up with various topics.

Project: Nova

This will be an attempt to document everything known about the Nova, since there seems to be many disagreements of what happened to the Nova after Kreissack's death. This is sorted by the years: 2097, 2099, 2117. There is also a reference to Nova from the game Tyrian, and i have added that to the 2117 part, there is also a link to the Data-cube itself.

Year 2097: (1 Player Game)

What is known:
Rumors: Regarding the experiments
Rumors: Regarding the death of two Nova researchers
Facts: After Kreissack's death

Nova was a HAR created by Kreissack made for warfare, also the ability to keep a human mind inside the HAR. Every scientist in the project was killed in a fire, together with all records of the Nova.

Dr. and Mrs. Devroe was killed in an arranged space shuttle accident, when the Dr. wanted to jump off the project after he realized what Kreisack was using hes research for. The accident was ordered by Kreissack himself, and he hired the Iron Fist mercenary band for “research” and gave them 1500K$ payoff. Iron fist destroyed the space shuttle with laser fire.

Facts: Rebuilding the nova:

Steffan and Jean Paul want to continue building the Nova as a means for military force. to further they own goals. Shirro wants the Nova for the immense power it showed. However, he does not cherish the thought of becoming another Kreissack. So he will probably recreate it for the sports sake as a normal HAR, and is very likely to hire Ibrahim, hes friend, to do the design. Ibrahim fell in love with the design instantly, and started drawing up plans right away. But as a normal HAR, with normal brain link and not brain move. Cossette on the other hand, fully plans to take advantage of the mind transference, and want to rebuild the Nova but slightly different, and as the Cossette robot instead.

Crystal and Angel completely opposes the creation of the Nova. Milano, Christian and Raven do not offer any comment on the Nova whatsoever.

Score:

Current score is 5 vs 5,

In any event, even if Crystal won, Ibrahim would have seen the fight and decided to recreate the bot. That would also hold true for just about every combination of victory possible. Except that if Cossette won she might have influenced the design into the Cossette robot, instead of Nova. Another minor difference, is that without the resources of Ganymede creation of Nova would be more difficult. But not overly so, it would at worst slow down the work, and even if Ibrahim didn't win, some of the others like Steffan and Jean Paul would likely hire him for hes expertise on HAR design, he is after all known as the greatest HAR designer in WAR. If Crystal or Angel won, they might have tried to hush the design down. It would most likely not work, as Ibrahim and Cossette as famous HAR designers already have considerable power and influence on all aspects of HAR design.

Summary:

Half the pilots are interested in creating the Nova again, varying reasons and what aspect they liked the best, the mind robot, or the fighting HAR. But no matter what they prefer at least three (Shirro, Ibrahim, Cossette), will be continuing the work. So the Nova will be recreated in some way or another. And Ibrahim's idea seems the most likely, even if he lost.

Year 2099: (Tournament Play)

What is know:

The Tournament sport is going for full, so Shirro must have gotten hes wish come true. The Nova exist as a normal HAR, so Ibrahim seems to have completed hes dream. We do not hear anything about any political trifles in 2099, so it is does not sound like either: Crystal, Steffan, Milano, Christian, Jean-Paul, Angel, Cossette or Raven won. This leaves Shirro and Ibrahim the most likely alternatives, but that is irrelevant right here.

The Nova is fully operational, and even used by certain high ranked pilots. So in short, Nova is back!

Year 2117: (One Must Fall : Battleground)

What is know:

The tournaments have developed even further, it is now an all consuming sport with sponsors and prestige, However. The Nova is not known to exist at all in 2117, at least not in use at the tournaments.

Year Unknwon: (Tyrian)

We do have a reference from Steffan in a “future” as he messages hes friend Trent a datalink. The datalink is available here for research reasons:

Datalink from Steffan.

But in short, Steffan seems to have controll over Ganymede, and that he hope Trent havent lost hes skills in piloting the Nova III. Now this might not be the same reality as the current OMF reality, but still, it is a consideration.

Who won Ganymede?

Who won the tournament in 2097 ?

Well everyone have probably thought about who really did win the 2097 tournaments, especially since there is a sort of 'follow up' game and all that. So I thought I would put together some facts here and try reaching a conclusion.

Motivation for winning the tournament:

So what did actually happen ?

Mayor Hans Kreissack got killed, someone was put as leader of Ganymede. And after that every ending is different, and as such cant be used for any clarifications. So we will have to look at the Tournament play for more info. The Tournament Play is set to the year of 2099, after the success of the competition in 2097. The tournament play does not offer much information, but some things can be drawn from the tournaments. First of all, all the characters from 1-player is still in tournament play, nine of them is even in the first tournament, and Angel is hidden character in some of the other tournaments. Save that none of the quotes mention anything at all about winning or loosing, the closest is Shirro's comment about not signing autographs.

The company of W.A.R. still exists. that rules out some of the characters plans, but could also be that they haven't gotten their plans through yet. Milano wanted to change WAR into ART, as well as Jean-pauls interest in overthrowing WAR completely. There is no mentioning Ganymede anywhere, so no clues there either. The fact that the tournaments exist at all, sounds very much like what Shirro planed for. The Nova exist again, which sounds allot like Ibrahims plans. The Nova works like a common HAR, as opposed to what Cossette wanted, this can mean either that she didn't win, or that she was unable to figure out how to make the technique Kreissack used to lock a human brain inside a HAR worked. uncertain if she should get a minus point or not, but I'll give her one anyways. None of the other characters can be confirmed or opposed.

Summary

Ibrahim and Shirro gets a point each, Jean-paul, Cossette and Milano gets a minus point. The rest doesn't get anything. Some of the plans could have been done even without winning the 1-player, notably Shiro and Ibrahim's plans. but also Crystal, Christian and Cossette (somewhat). Depending slightly on who actually did win. This game is so open ended, great way to do it. But I would say that either Shirro or Ibrahim won. Or even more likely, one of them won, and they teamed up so that both could do what they love the most.

What is Angel?

Is Angel an Alien or a Human ?

Many times Angel refers to other characters as “humans”, and implies that she is not. So what is she ? Angel claims she comes from Ganymede, and from what we can see from her ending this seems to be true.

In short summary: Angel is from Ganymede, which is currently unoccupied by known human civilizations. There is apparently some sort of civilization there from before. These people seems to consider themselves something different than humans. However there is nothing to verify this.

Main developer Rob Elam once mentioned on the forums that Angel was of an off-shot of humans, that have spent quite a few years living on Ganymede already. But alas, he didn't explain any further.

One Must Fall 2097 Time-line

Timeline

This is a recreation of all the date and events happened in OMF2097, put together into a Time-line and added corrections as said by Rob Elam. It actually works now without a flaw :)

Sources: OMF2097 game, Manual, Manual.doc, Rob Elam

Inconsistencies

This is the post I posted on OMF.COM to try to get answers:

There are some problems with this time-line, first of all let us ignore tournament mode and focus on 1-player. There are only two problems with the story in 1-player: ( * marks where i list an “easy fix”.)

One Player

Problem: 1

Ibrahim have two last names “Hothe” as used in the Jaguar creator description, and “Jihad” as used in hes ending in 1-player.

Problem: 2

In the manual you have a “story” or “intro” for 1-player game, it is also in the MANUAL.DOC that should lie in your OMF folder. This story states that “you” have trained for 15 years for this moment (quoted below): Quote: The year is 2097. Friday. You've waited for this night since you were a child. Fifteen years of training will be used tonight - your future career the main prize.

This means that “you” started training in the year 2082, There is several problems with this. Birth dates of characters is one, Steffan was born 2080, he would have started training at age of 2. Chrystal and Christian would have started training 10 years before their parents got killed, which was their main motivation for joining WAR. Milano was hired by Raven in 2090, and was technically not involved with WAR before that time.

Other details like 3 of the 10 HAR's available was not even created yet, and Shadow was created a single year before 2097, if it required 15 years of training then no-one should be able to use it. Ironically it fits Cossette's background story with her accident 15 years earlier. Shirro would have been 58 years at the time, that would not match well with the reference to “kid” later in the story, nor with the reference to “having waited for this night since you where a child.”.

Even the alternative that this “training” refers to not only HAR training but also the training and preparation to school, join WAR, getting better ranks, and doing better jobs etc would conflict in some cases: Steffan a tad to young, Christian & Crystal not getting engaged with WAR at all until year 2092, Milano getting hired at 2090, Angel showing up right before the tournament etc.

Tournament Play

Tournament play includes another piece of story that is only included in the manual. The years 2059, 2060, 2061, 2064, 2065 are from this story text. This raises a few more problems, as well as some texts from the tournament descriptions. but lets start easy, some of the characters in tournament mode have names that can remind of some of the persons that created some of the HAR's, and thus I am curious if it cold be laid to rest if they are the same persons or not:

Problem: 3

Also Robyrt mentioned that some HAR design names had similarities with various persons employed at Epic MegaGames at the times ? Either way would be nice to get that settled.

Problem: 4

Another quite severe storyline break: In 2064 the Common Government banned all full contact sports. Yet in Cossette's background story we see reference to the game known as “The Arena” where humans are strapped inside 15-feet tall robotic frames (not HAR) and did gladiator duels. This is referred to as “15 years ago”, in other words in the year of 2082. The Arena is also referred to as a common public sport, and as the top of hype for that period.

Yes I have been pointed out that when put into “robot frames” its not “technical” full contact sport. But considering that a game like soccer was banned, that actually penalizes for intentional body contact. A game like Arena is still gladiator combat, and is aimed toward causing physical damage to the opponents robot frame. Considering these where not HAR's someone had to be inside controlling them, thus extensive damage to the robot could cause damage to the pilot. While i can only assume the Common Government is not such idiots as to pass a law that is so easy to circumvent.

Problem: 5

Quote: “Attempt to wrestle the North American title from the two time World Champion, Raven.”

Taken from the North American Open description from the manual/in game. Tournament mode is set to year 2100. I assume tournaments such as world championship is held once each year, further strengthened by the last comment when you complete world championship “see you next year”. Ian Tavares is the current world champion, which means he must have won last year (2099). Now NorthAm states that Raven have been world champion twice. We have heard of no other world champions so just to get things to fit somewhat in we assume he won the years of 2098 and 2097 being the two years before Ian Tavares won. The year 2100 is the first year with public tournaments, 2099 is the first year fights are shown to the public as entertainment. So this hints at (but does not prove in any way) that WAR have had test tournaments to prepare for the public like in 2099. It could also be read as Raven won the fight for Ganymede in 2097, since it was a “tournament”. Basically this means nothing, it gives no concrete answers.

Problem: 6

Quote: “This militant country has managed, in the past years, to establish a respected tournament.”

Taken from Katushai Challenge description from manual/in-game. In short, it hints that the tournaments have been going on for several years. This is by the time-line wrong. But the tournaments seems made to represent that the tournaments have been going on for at least 3 years or more (see NorthAm above). It could also be argued that each tournament takes one year, so every-time you join a new another year pass, but pure guesswork.

Clarifications

Response from Rob Elam, Diversions Entertainment:

Wow, that's a bunch of stuff'

  1. Yes, it's supposed to be Hothe.
  2. The intro story was intended as a generic fighter's story, not intended as any particular fighter and wasn't really considered to be applied to any of the fighters in the tournament. Even so, I agree a shorter time for training would have been better. Side note, that, as most of the stuff in the docs, was written by my brother Ryan Elam.
  3. Yea, names were mostly jumbled up comrades at epic.
  4. One thing not touched on is that the world is not ruled completely by a centralized government, and has less 'civilized' territories much like we have now (a concept perhaps never touched on in the OMF games, I'm not sure). The Arena was supposed to take place outside of the common civilized world and although not what I'd call 'underground', it wasn't mainstream either. I guess kinda like how Boxing is more mainstream than UFC.
  5. The Ganymede tournament was a separate event, not tied to tournaments. To be honest, I wanted Raven to just be a somewhat over the hill seasoned veteran, and giving him 2 world championships was a way to get that across easily. I really wasn't thinking about the tournament start dates and what not, and in retrospect should never have mentioned when they started at all. I think it's better anyway if they have a somewhat timeless feel.
  6. The tournaments were supposed to take a year, but as stated above they weren't really supposed to have any historical relevance, and dates should have never been mentioned.

Regarding 5 and 6 it is mostly the same question. They are answered as far as reasons why they are as they are goes, it is mostly about getting a specific date for the year one joins the tournament play (and no, Rob nor Ryan actually said when the “you” character joined the tournaments, just when the tournaments was first time official).
